Show Recap: Yaeji for Local Wolves

Yaeji — The Novo in Los Angeles, CA — April 20, 2023

Yaeji kept the party going at the Novo in Los Angeles on April 20th after showcasing at Coachella Weekend 1 just a week before and rallied into the weekend for Coachella Weekend 2. With high energy throughout the show, Yaeji blended Korean and English lyrics into a melting pot of deep house, EDM, and hip hop. Dancers Madison Wada and Iliana Penichet-Ramírez accompanied Yaeji on stage to create a contemporary style of dance to the music. Her new album, With A Hammer breaks down stereotypes and societal standards expected of her as an Asian American woman.

As an Asian American woman myself, to see her break these kinds of barriers on stage in an industry where there’s not a lot of Asian representation (but also in the creative industry in general), it’s heartwarming to be able to show little Asian girls that anything is possible. With what you see on Yaeji’s TikTok, you can see her personality completely translate into her performance on stage. What you see is literally what you get. When the OG banger “Raingurl” comes on, the crowd continues to rage harder and you can see everyone making it rain on the dance floor (me included).
